 2017 Preview

Berry completed the 2016 season with a 5-6 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region five, the Wildcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Berry's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Cedar Bluff by a score of 41-20.

Berry took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2003. The Wildcats hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just five games which followed a 10-3 record in 2015.

Since 2010, Berry has gone a combined 53-30. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 1A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Berry has managed to compile a record of 141-142. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 1A and 183rd in the AHSAA.

Danny Raines leaves Berry after fourteen seasons as the winningest coach in school history. His record of 102-59 includes a dozen playoff appearances and nine post season victories.

Raines has accepted the head coaching position at Headland High.

Caleb Hynds, a 2007 graduate of Winfield, will take over the football program at Berry. This will be his first head coaching position on the football field.

The Berry Wildcats will play in Class 1A region five during the 2017 season.

The Wildcats will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2010 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2017.

Senior Adrian Person Jr. returns after catching 32 passes for 712 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Senior Dandre Sinclair also returns after catching 27 passes for 673 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also collected four interceptions on defense.

Another returnee is Senior Mack Wise returns who rushed for 1,077 yards on 107 carries and scoring 18 touchdowns while averaging over 10 yards per carry.

The Wildcats open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Curry on Friday, August 25 at Fred Webster Stadium. Last year the Curry Yellow Jackets finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 5A region six. The Yellow Jackets ended last season on a positive note with a win over Carbon Hill by a score of 70-46 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Berry and Curry have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 4-2-0 record against the Yellow Jackets. They last met in 2016 with Berry winning by a score of 6-0.

Berry returns 1A All-State Senior receiver Christian Emberg. He was named to the first team last season.
